Volunteers at Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma

The newly chartered and formed Ohio State Alumni Club of Oklahoma held their first Volunteer event.  Our group selected the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma which is the state’s largest private, domestic hunger-relief organization.  The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma services 53 counties in in the Western and Central part of Oklahoma.

Picture1Our Team of 29 volunteers brought along over 180 lbs. of shelf sustainable food for donation and then packed over 3920 lbs. of food for a grand total of 4100 lbs. which is equivalent to 3,417 meals.

Volunteers included Alumni Mary and Jack Cooley, their daughter and her friend, Alumni Shaun and Stephanie McGinnis, their two daughters and a friend, Picture2Alumni Helen Patel, Sandra Snelling, Joey Yost, Sally Longley, and Nicole Musgrave, Alumni Lynn and Paul Crow; Alumni Steve Kalmeyer and his wife Debbie; Alumni Rachael Trotter and her Sister; Alumni Dian Putman and her two sons, and Alumni Timothy and Nancy Bridges and their Daughter, Son in Law and two grandchildren (29 in total).

The Regional Food Bank operates a Food for Kids program with the Backpack Program.  During the school year, chronically hungry elementary school students receive a backpack full of nutritious, kid friendly, non-perishable food every Friday.  Last year they provided food to 18,486 students in 514 schools. This program transitions to Summer Feeding when school is not in session.   The Regional Food bank operates it Summer Feeding program through a partnership with the USDA Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), the Oklahoma Department of Education, Sodexo and the community.

The Ohio State Alumni Club of Oklahoma supported the summer feeding program by packing enough food to feed 1188 kids for a weekend.
